WVU Morgantown

Flagship Campus. Economic Driver.

At the heart of WVU’s statewide impact is the Morgantown campus, the flagship of the WVU System and a powerful driver of economic growth and innovation.

In FY24, WVU Morgantown generated $3.0 billion in total statewide economic activity, serving as a cornerstone of West Virginia’s education, research, and employment landscape.

Of this total, $509.5 million stemmed from direct spending on payroll, operations, and construction projects that sustain local businesses and support a diverse workforce. An additional $2.5 billion in indirect and induced impacts flowed through the state’s economy as university-related spending by employees, students, and vendors circulated through sectors such as housing, retail, healthcare, and professional services.

The Morgantown campus supports 26,880 jobs statewide, including 5,635 direct university positions and 21,245 additional jobs supported through multiplier effects in the broader economy. In addition, WVU Morgantown generated $193.3 million in state and local tax revenue in FY24, strengthening the fiscal foundation for public services, infrastructure, and community development throughout the Mountain State.

As the hub of the university’s academic, research, healthcare, and innovation ecosystem, WVU Morgantown not only educates thousands of students each year but also anchors economic opportunity, fosters entrepreneurship, and propels West Virginia’s long-term prosperity.
