WVU serves as the state’s primary engine for workforce and economic development, preparing graduates with the skills and innovation mindset to advance West Virginia’s economy. Nearly two-thirds of WVU graduates remain in-state, strengthening key sectors such as healthcare, energy, education, and public service across all 55 counties.
With more than 210,000 alumni worldwide—including 115,958 living and working in West Virginia—WVU graduates generated an estimated $8.1 billion in annual economic activity.
Through hands-on learning, research, and strong partnerships, WVU aligns academic programs with the state’s workforce priorities. In FY24, the university conferred 6,800 degrees, producing career-ready professionals in high-demand fields:
Health Professions
WVU remains the state’s largest producer of healthcare professionals, awarding more than 200 advanced degrees in medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry, and hundreds more in nursing. Nearly half of medical graduates remain in-state for residency, with 77% of those trained in West Virginia staying to practice—directly expanding access to care. In addition, WVU offers a robust range of undergraduate degrees in biomedical sciences and other health professions.
Education
WVU certified more than 200 new teachers in FY24, helping fill shortages in rural and high-need districts and sustaining a robust educator pipeline.
Engineering
The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources achieved an 88% placement rate and generated more than $37 million in increased sales and cost savings through workforce training programs that created or retained nearly 600 jobs statewide.
Business and Entrepreneurship
The Chambers College of Business and Economics reported a 92% post-graduation placement rate, while WVU’s LaunchLab and IDEA Hub supported 322 new businesses and 547 jobs.
Arts and Creative Industries
The College of Creative Arts and Media fuels the state’s cultural and tourism economy through hundreds of performances and exhibits that draw thousands of visitors each year.
